Galway Bay U14s Part of Brilliant Day for Women’s Rugby

24 April, 2026 Girls Rugby - Galway Bay Rugby

Last weekend was a big one for women’s rugby in the west, and Galway Bay had two of our U14 girls right in the middle of it.

They lined out at a girls’ rugby blitz as part of a combined team with players from Bruff, UL Bohs, Garryowen and Richmond. It could have taken a while for a group like that to click, but fair play to the coaches — the girls settled quickly and looked like they’d been playing together all season.

What stood out most was the attitude. New teammates, new setup, but the communication was constant. They worked through positions, helped each other out, and kept the energy up on the sideline as well as on the pitch. Exactly what you’d want to see.

After the blitz, the group got a chance to relax together over pizza before heading into Dexcom Stadium to watch Ireland vs Italy Women’s Six Nations. A pretty good way to finish off the day and a great experience for the girls. Which featured two Galway bay rugby players Leah Foyle & Emily Naughton playing at half time.

Emily Naughton

All in all, a class day and a great sign of where the women’s game is heading. Fair play to everyone involved.

About Joe

Joe Naughton is a Galway-based writer who spends far too much time talking about sport and not nearly enough time playing it. A firm believer that every match deserves a proper write-up, even if it was played in sideways rain in a field with no lines.
